Learn Yoga: Sun Salutations

Yoga at the Y is an experience for everybody! Elan, in this video, takes the time to introduce and talk us through a basic Sun Salutation… an opportunity to greet and bow to the sun in gratitude! This is one of the sequences you may be introduced to in our YMCA Hatha or Vinyasa yoga classes which take place in the Y Yurt Monday through Saturday!
Sun Salutations have several health benefits. We're not talking just about relaxation or calming nerves (while many yoga practices can help with these!). The moves in the sun salutation can help in several areas of fitness:
Strengthened core muscles
Improved balance
Develops the chest
Increased flexibility
The practice of yoga is about creating balance in the body by developing both strength and flexibility. This work happens as the instructor works participants through series of postures and holds designed for specific benefits. Poses can be modified, and adjusted allowing the practice to be available to beginners as well as advanced practitioners.
At the Y, all of our instructors hold a world wide recognized certification as a minimum, 200 hour, Registered Teacher with Yoga Alliance. When you attend a class at the Y, you know you will be valued during your mat time, and your instructor holds credentials allowing leadership in a safe and meaningful practice.
Yoga class, as well as other group instruction offerings, may be found on our website www.hsymca.org, or by downloading our Y app. You may also call and inquire at our welcome center if you have unanswered questions.
We look forward to seeing you soon!
